Transform in the stillness

Action and noise feel like progress in transformations.

Space feels risky.

I could just be biased, I crave space. It’s why I yoga. My favourite bit isn't the trying to balance or a good stretch pose always named after an animal.

My favourite bit is savasana. It translates to ‘corpse posture’ but it’s not morbid.

It’s the letting go of striving. The still moment where doing stops and integration happens.

And if you’re lucky, ten minutes of quiet.

However the thing I notice is its never quiet.

If you’re actually paying attention, it’s loud.

Your mind runs through lists, unfinished conversations, doubts, ideas, discomfort. The hum of traffic outside, the yogi beside snoring (yes it happens). The noise was always there.

You just stopped drowning it out with movement.

To me that's why I like it best, the value isn’t in creating silence. It’s in learning what to listen to.

I know that's where transformation really happens, in the stillness.

I’ve watched transformation programmes stall and honestly, I’ve led some that did.

Not because the plans were wrong, or good humans weren't capable of great things.

They failed because we confused action with progress. So we added more.

More plans. More governance. More RAG-rated PowerPoint decks.

More status updates, initiatives, activity workstreams.

Ain't no party like a colourful Monday board or Trello party.

I’m not sure I’ve met a leader who's objective is to overwork their team, not establish clear priorities or to tank engagement.

But in large organisations, noise scales faster than clarity. Every leader adds something sensible, sprinkles if you will. A new priority, initiatives, metric.

Individually logical, collectively overwhelming.

Leaders see their part of the picture, not the cumulative layering the organisation is asking people to absorb. That’s harder to unveil.

And more costly when it goes unheard.

To the top, it looks like momentum.

From the teams trying to deliver on the last three launch and leave initiatives while absorbing the next one, it feels like overload.

The shift I’ve tried to make and help others make:

A leader’s job isn’t to create silence.

It’s to help people tune into the right noise.

To decide what actually matters now, what can wait, and what needs to stop.

Because transformation doesn’t stall from a lack of effort. It stalls when everything is asking to be heard at once.

We can do anything. We can’t do everything.

At least not all at the same time.

If this feels familiar, it's not failure.

You’re probably leading in a system that rewards adding over subtracting. We're in action based industries after all. And with all of the AI spun productivity, that’s not slowing.

Sometimes leadership is saying 'we're not doing that.'

It’s lying on the mat a moment longer than feels comfortable. Creating enough space for the right sounds to be seen and heard.

And the hardest part isn’t knowing what to stop. It’s telling someone their ‘sprinkle’ is the thing that stops!
